For those of you who are just joining this blog, it\u2019s a character study of the protagonist, Samantha Pederson, for my next book, <\/strong><\/em>Antimatter<\/strong><\/em> (working title). She tells about her life starting just before she turns 16 and follows the events that shape her personality up till her current involvement in a government organization that researches technical development for potential threats to our security. In the previous episode Samantha had pulled off an elaborate prank on Principal Ashworth, but as careful as she had been about hiding her involvement, someone had called her on it.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

My mind screamed, No way anyone could know what I did<\/em>. Forcing a what-are-you-talking-about expression, I turned on the bench to face my accuser. \u201cDwayne!\u201d I was dumbfounded. I sat there with my mouth open.<\/p>\n

Dwayne filled the silence. \u201cHey, your secret\u2019s safe with me.\u201d He glanced at Renee. I couldn\u2019t help myself, I looked at her too.<\/p>\n

A puzzled expression on her face, Renee asked, \u201cWhat are you looking at me for? I don\u2019t even know what you\u2019re talking about. What secret?\u201d<\/p>\n

Renee wasn\u2019t slow, and I could see the realization dawning on her face. \u201cYou mean you \u2026? You set off that awful noise. But \u2026 but how?\u201d<\/p>\n

We all scanned the bleachers around us. No one was near enough to hear us. It was one of those years for the team, so bad the attendance was always low. I returned my gaze to Renee. I wasn\u2019t about to acknowledge what I did, even by acquiescence unless I had her word she wouldn\u2019t tell.<\/p>\n

Renee realized what I was looking for. \u201cI won\u2019t tell anyone either.\u201d<\/p>\n

I glanced at Dwayne. He smiled and gave a single nod, confirming he wouldn’t say anything.<\/p>\n

First I had to know. \u201cHow did you conclude I was involved?\u201d<\/p>\n

He shrugged. \u201cFrom what little I know of you, you\u2019re not the type to let someone wrong you and get away with it, and it was pretty clear you thought Ashworth was deliberately after you. I have to agree with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWait. You didn\u2019t actually know I had something to do with this? So you tricked me into admitting \u2026\u201d My anger flared. If he hadn\u2019t been out of reach, I don\u2019t know what I would have done.<\/p>\n

It must have shown. He shrunk back. \u201cI had to know. I want in on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I had started to get up, but that stopped me. \u201cYou want in on it?\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded. \u201cAs long as no one actually gets hurt. It looks like fun, and he\u2019s pissed off enough people with the way he runs the school. He needs some retaliation.\u201d<\/p>\n

I relaxed and so did Dwayne. I regarded Renee. \u201cWhat about you? I don\u2019t want to get you in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m in. After all, we went to jail together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dwayne\u2019s eyebrows rose. The police incident wasn\u2019t common knowledge. Right then it occurred to me that our run in with the police might be why Ashworth was down on me. I had to say something to Dwayne. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t anything. I played a prank on a couple of cops. They took us to jail to scare us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd it worked,\u201d Renee added with a rueful smile. \u201cI\u2019ve never been so scared.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dwayne stepped down to our bleacher. \u201cGetting back on the subject, how did<\/em> you pull this off today?\u201d<\/p>\n

It took me all of ten minutes to outline what I had done. Dwayne commented, \u201cYou realize this may be your crowning achievement. It\u2019s going to be awfully hard for us to top it.\u201d Something about that statement irritated me, but I couldn\u2019t tell what at the time.<\/p>\n

The game should have been called at half-time. Our team was so far behind, the other team could have gone home and we still wouldn\u2019t have caught up by the end of the game. Even the most loyal fans were streaming out of the stadium. Heck, Ashworth had gone silent.<\/p>\n

Dwayne stood up. \u201cThis is ridiculous. What say we go to Baskin-Robbins and drown our sorrows \u2026 while we plan our campaign?\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded and climbed to my feet. At the same time I felt some resentment. Dwayne was taking over my revenge effort. I didn\u2019t want to discourage him, but I wanted to make sure he knew I was in charge.<\/p>\n

\u2013\u2013\u2013 # \u2013\u2013\u2013<\/p>\n

Baskin-Robbins was filled when we got there, so we had to stand in line. By the time we had gotten our ice cream, a table had cleared out, so Renee and I grabbed it and left Dwayne to pay for our orders. Renee took a window seat and I took the outside seat opposite her to see what Dwayne would do. He took the window seat next to me.<\/p>\n

As he sat, he asked, \u201cDo you think we can talk here?\u201d<\/p>\n

I scanned the crowd. \u201cWe should be okay \u2026 as long as we\u2019re discrete.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAny idea what the next stunt should be?\u201d Was he taking over again?<\/p>\n

Personally I wanted to bask in the glory of having succeeded on my first attempt, but that wouldn\u2019t be taking command. Still I said, \u201cI\u2019m open to suggestions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dwayne responded immediately. \u201cI\u2019m thinking in terms of hacking into the school website and posting unflattering pictures of Ashworth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIsn\u2019t that illegal?\u201d Renee wanted to know.<\/p>\n

I nodded. \u201c\u2018Fraid so \u2026 however, we could always start a new website and post unflattering stuff there. I bet we could get a domain name that people would check out because it looks so much like the school\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut they could always trace the posts back to us,\u201d Dwayne objected.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot if we signed Ashworth up from a school computer for an obscure email account and use that account to sign up for a free website.\u201d I was pretty sure that would work.<\/p>\n

Renee countered, \u201cDon\u2019t the internet service providers have rules about that sort of thing?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow would they know?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

She looked skeptical. \u201cI don\u2019t know, but I bet they would. Somehow I think all that would be asking for trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

I considered for a second. \u201cI tell you what, Renee. Why don\u2019t you research the ramifications? I want to cause Ashworth discomfort, not get him in legal trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

She still looked doubtful. \u201cOkay, I\u2019ll do that, but I\u2019ll bet it won\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n

I glanced at Dwayne. I had managed to take control of the group, and he didn\u2019t seem to mind. I didn\u2019t realize at the time I had driven a wedge between us.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
